Drawbacks to Owning Chickens

While owning chickens has so many benefits, it is important to know what you could experience.

Noise. Several birds can be quite loud at times, clucking while laying eggs or if upset. The clucking is usually in short bursts during the daytime. It is important to know that roosters may start crowing as early as 3:30 AM. This could cause issues with your neighbors and make it virtually impossible to keep roosters in city environments, even if zoning allows for keeping roosters. Quail may be more your speed if noise would be an issue because the male quail is quieter than a rooster, but still makes noise. If you are a restless sleeper, you may be waking up to the cock-a-doodle-do of roosters. Plan your flock accordingly.

Chickens need space. They like to wander. Chickens need to feel the open air and they love to peck at bugs on plants. They love to eat your garden. Plan accordingly before your get the birds. When confined one male can be kept with up to ten hens. Allow about 10 feet per bird when housing them.

Training. Chickens can be trained to come to the sound of rattling chicken grain. Our chickens love corn scratch but during the summer we restrict the corn because it heats up their body.

Poop. Chickens will rest on nearest flat surface when free ranging and poop. Make sure to cover benches or BBQ grills. WE had to build a gate to keep them off the back porch. If kept in coop the poop needs to be cleaned off the perches and removed from cage regularly.

Can fly over fences. Chickens have the capability to fly over fences. This mean unless you clip one wing or build your fence fairly high, your garden may be history.
